Grace Sprite Roughs

A little showcase of the rough sprites I did of Grace for Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical.

Stray Gods is a game that uses 3D environments and entirely hand drawn 2D characters. As the character artist, I did "roughs" of every sprite based on storyboards, which would then get inked and rendered by another artist. To make sure we had a consistent style cross the game, the rough sprites were done in high detail so the inkers could have as much information as possible. This also helped the Cinematic team to know what they were storyboarding with early on in development.

Our playable character Grace was designed to be bold but not too eye catching while also being easy enough to draw hundreds of times over years of development.

Early on we made the decision to draw all individual sprites full body, even if the storyboard didn't call for it.
By doing this, we could create a tracked library of full body sprites that could be repurposed for any kind of shot framing.

Grace finds herself in many situations throughout the game but for most standing and sitting poses, we did our best to make those sprites versatile enough to reuse in various scenes.
